We are proud to announce our role in the development of the private 5G cellular network at Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport (MSP) in partnership with the Metropolitan Airports Commission (MAC), Insight Enterprises, and Ericsson.
Reliable connectivity is vital for the transportation industry, especially when you’re one of the nation’s busiest airports. When MAC was looking for a private cellular network for MSP, they brought together the expertise of Insight Enterprises, Ericsson, and Pierson Wireless; three companies with innovative applications and decades of experience.
Private Network Needs
MSP needed a private network system that would support operational needs across the entire airport as well as the safety and security that only a dedicated wireless infrastructure could provide. Eduardo Valencia, CIO for MAC said it best, “Transportation, public safety, maintenance, security and other airport operations all depend on connectivity. We’re basically running a city without residents.”
This is where a private 5G network really shines. Traditional WiFi infrastructure can be limiting, designed for local connectivity and shared access. Private 5G offers secure, highly reliable, and mobile coverage; creating a foundation for innovative applications across the MSP international airport.
Partnership with Pierson Wireless
When it came time for Insight Enterprises and Ericsson to deploy the private 5G solution for MAC, they needed a partner with proven proficiency to deploy and install telecommunications in a complex airport environment. Pierson Wireless’ long-standing relationship with both MSP and Insight Enterprises made them the stand out choice to provide dedicated wireless infrastructure to MSP.
Because airport deployments require specialized access, safety procedures, and coordination, Pierson Wireless leveraged its experience working within airport environments to help move the project from concept to implementation.
From a construction and RF perspective Pierson Wireless led the installation for the Ericsson system, including coaxial cables, jumpers, splitters, sleds, and other necessary components. This equipment was deployed across a variety of challenging locations, including rooftops and sidewall, utilizing bucket trucks and lifts when necessary.
