Private LTE Testing to Gauge Performance Capabilities

With the availability of shared spectrum and licensed frequency bands such as the 900MHz band, Private LTE has become a viable wireless solution for private enterprise. Private LTE offers owners control of a carrier-grade network that provides high reliability, end-to-end QoS, mobility, and superior performance.

A recent RCR Wireless News article states that Dominion Energy, an energy and power company headquartered in Richmond, Virginia, has plans to test a private LTE network at 900MHz. This frequency will allow the company to see if the network can accommodate the company’s current and future connectivity and communication needs. The test will be conducted in two different environments: a rugged terrain rural environment and an urban environment. This test is approved by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and will be analyzed over a two-year period.

“Dominion said that it wants to evaluate private LTE to see if it can provide reliable communications for SCADA, redundancy for operational needs, electric transmission sensors and controls, automation and monitoring, mobile voice, push-to-talk, and other workforce mobility solutions, as well as potentially supporting the use of drones for aerial inspections.”

Pierson Wireless is not affiliated with the Dominion Energy project, however, has been involved in designing and deploying Private LTE network solutions for many years and is excited to see or hear the results of this trial and other similar trials aimed at advancing the deployment of Private LTE networks.
