Extreme weather conditions such as tornadoes, wildfires, and hurricanes can disrupt network connectivity for everyone. While restoration of connectivity services is a priority, the physical damage caused by the weather event may make it nearly impossible to quickly restore services. In that situation, just as firemen bring in water to put out the fire, what if network providers did the same thing? Here is what Verizon is doing.
On Wednesday, Verizon announced the release of a Tactical Humanitarian Operations Response (THOR) vehicle. The following information was provided in Verizon’s release.
THOR, a mobile, private Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband and mobile edge compute (MEC) rapid-response command center vehicle is an innovative prototype capable of deploying Verizon Frontline technology, including Verizon 5G Ultra Wideband, along with additional applications and advanced computing solutions for partners including first responders and the the Department of Defense.
Offering full radio interoperability and built on a uniquely-modified Ford F650 chassis, with a six-seat cab and three-seat rear command center, THOR can provide its own mobile network and also features capabilities ranging from commercial satellite options to the ability to be operated remotely from a tablet.
“Verizon Frontline is the advanced network and technology built for first responders – developed over nearly three decades of partnership with public safety officials and agencies – to meet their unique needs.”
In times of disaster recovery, Verizon Frontline’s THOR is designed to bridge the connectivity gaps between public safety agencies or the Department of Defense to ensure clear, quality communication.
